Design

Who designed Delta?

Jordi Vilanova (1925–1998) worked with his collective, La Cantonada, to bring design into everyday furniture in 1960s Spain: functional pieces with a modest character, made to be used rather than admired from a distance. He designed Delta in 1964. That same year it won a Silver Delta from ADI-FAD, the Barcelona design association, and the piece took its name from the prize.

Materials and use

How is Delta made?

Delta is made from solid natural pine with a water-based varnish. Its form is an intersection of horizontal and vertical planes, which is what gives it more than one use.

In 1953 he set up his own interiors firm, and in 1960 opened a showroom in a house on the corner of Freixa and Ganduxer streets, where his furniture was shown alongside ceramics, tapestries, lamps, and paintings by friends. Those friends became La Cantonada, the collective he formed with the ceramicist Jordi Aguadé, the painter and stained-glass artist Joan Vila Grau, and the jeweller Aureli Bisbe, later...
