Description

Cestita is the small version of Cesta, the lantern-inspired lamp Miguel Milá designed in 1962, made by Santa & Cole. Its slimmer cherry wood structure holds a white opal globe in glass or in polyethylene, the tougher option for homes with children. It stands 36 cm high, small enough for a bedside table or a shelf.

Design

Who designed Cestita?

Miguel Milá (1931–2024) designed Cesta in 1962 after the lanterns of Mediterranean houses. Cestita, Spanish for small basket, is its younger sibling, with the same idea at a smaller scale: a cherry wood structure that holds and protects an opal globe.

Materials and use

Glass or polyethylene?

Both globes are white opal and give the same soft light. Glass is the classic version. Polyethylene is lighter and more resistant to knocks, which makes it the better choice for children's rooms or anywhere the lamp might fall.

Spanish

Miguel Milá (Barcelona, 1931 – Bilbao, 2024) was one of the founders of modern Spanish design, and one of the few of his generation who was not an architect. He was born into a Catalan family with deep ties to the arts: his uncle Pedro Milá y Camps commissioned Gaudí's Casa Milá, known as La Pedrera. In the late 1950s he began working on interiors in the studio of his brother Alfonso Milá and Federico Correa and, finding almost nothing he could buy to furnish them, started designing his own lamps and furniture. To produce them he co-founded Tramo with the architects F. Ribas Barangé and E. Pérez Ullibarri. The name, short for Trabajos Molestos ("annoying jobs"), was a joke...
